NEW! Mask Making [1874]
This is a class that begins with a basic form (supplied by Sally) and builds a mask, using papier mache, into a face or creature that will be utterly unique. It is an engaging project and personally satisfying. Each mask takes about 5 classes to sculpt and decorate and paint. Sally will instruct and assist students in the formation of features molded from paper towels dipped in wheat paste and then strips of paper also dipped in the paste. Glass eyes will be ordered per specification of the student from an intreguing catalogue of taxidermy, price not included in class tuition. It takes about a week for the wet masks to dry allowing futher developements in the next class. Sally will coat each mask, front and back with a high gloss finish for preservation and effect. Cost includes all supplies except eyes for your mask - those will run an additional $8-15 payable to Sally once you know what you'd like.Class limit of 10 students so register early! www.academyfinearts.com or by calling 846-8499 |

Making Empty Bowls [1841-1843] - CLASS ADDED!
For the fourth year our pottery studio will sponsor an Empty Bowls event. The basic idea for Empty Bowls is simple.
- Potters and other community members donate handmade ceramic bowls.
- A simple meal of soup and bread is served. Guests donate $15 then choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder that there are always Empty Bowls in the world. There will also be a group of special bowls donated by noted potters in our area which will have higher prices.
- All proceeds beyond our expenses will go to Daily Bread.
- On a limited basis we will be having community groups in for bowl making sessions. If your group is interested in participating by having a bowl making session, (Sundays are available) please contact May Carter (434-528-3256 ext. 316) or just sign up for one of our scheduled sessions. Sign up early; space is limited!
Participants of all ages can make a handmade bowl to donate to the Academy's Empty Bowl Project. You will learn basic clay forming techniques, and feel good about donating your time and talents to a worthy cause! Experienced throwers can come prepared to work on the potter's wheel, and stay for a longer session. The fine print: you must preregister by the day before the session.
