Academy offers Family Art Saturday programming made possible by Greater Lynchburg Community Trust

LYNCHBURG - (February 13, 2013) Today, the Academy of Fine Arts announced receipt of a $4,000 grant from Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, purposed to offer Family Art Saturday programming that is free and open to the public. Through this grant, on a designated Saturday each month, the Academy main street galleries will be open to the public and free arts education classes for families will be offered in the Academy’s pottery studio. Also, the Academy will present a family friendly musical production with discounted tickets.

"Family Art Saturdays provide an opportunity for parents and children to work side-by-side on art projects in clay and other media," said May Carter, Director of the Pottery Studio at the Academy.

Each month, families can visit the new gallery exhibits and enjoy an art activity together.

"Opening the Academy Galleries on select Saturdays will offer an opportunity for patrons who cannot visit during the week to see the exhibits, and also encourage people to visit downtown Lynchburg on the weekends," said Ted Batt, Galleries Curator at the Academy. "Saturday hours will also offer a more intimate setting as we plan to offer artist talks, workshops and lectures."

Family Art Saturday programming can be viewed online at AcademyFineArts.com in the Events tab. Families must pre-register to attend a Family Art Saturday class. Gallery openings are scheduled each month on the Saturday following First Fridays.

The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust last funded Academy Family Art Saturdays in 2011, with a positive response from the community. The Academy continued Family Art Saturdays in 2012, keeping tuition and ticket costs relatively low. This year, the Academy can again offer free tuition and reduced ticket prices.
